Waves and Expression Series

This body of work is from my MFA thesis (and following years) and explores textures and patterns that could be created by combining carved acrylic, gold and silver leaf, and formed and fabricated silver frameworks. Some of the pieces are carved from the front, giving a more tactile texture to the work, while other pieces are carved from behind, providing a smooth front with dimensional carvings beneath the surface. All of the works in this series are cold connected to silver backs to provide protection to the precious metal leaf. All colors are Japanese colored fine silver leaf and all black details are created with crushed charcoal

The work is inspired by the spontaneous aesthetics of Abstract Expressionism and the fluidity and abstract nature of waves. The optical effects achieved through carving, leafing, and polishing forms are balanced with the heavily structed and often symmetrical silver frames.

This body of work is an exploration of wave forms carved into acrylic and leafed with fine gold and silver. Some of the pieces are carved from the front, giving a more tactile texture to the work.
